Heroic Aging: Science-Backed Approach to Meaningful Aging

Heroic aging philosophy quote about choosing heroism over optimism for meaningful life

why heroism?

I've chosen heroism as my philosophical approach to life. Why? In this article, I criticize positive psychology (and optimism in general), and propose heroism as the surer path to human flourishing. Further, I've provided a rough sketch of my reasoning, namely that heroism explicitly focuses on overcoming nihilism, whereas optimism and positive thinking merely avoid the topic and hope for the best. So why not begin your own Hero's Journey, resist the siren song of nihilism, and discover a life full of meaning and purpose?

about heroic aging

Heroic aging is a blend of philosophy, psychology, and biology to (hopefully) provide a coherent framework for leading a heroic life full of meaning, purpose, and significance.

Created by me (Gus), a disgruntled, cynical, pessimistic, nihilistic, and introverted Gen-Xer with an utter loathing of magical thinking and BS.

The primary purpose of heroic aging is to provide proven lifestyle interventions to help people age successfully, without going bankrupt.

The question of how to age successfully is reasonably straightforward. However, the question of why you should age successfully is a thornier problem.

You could go to the gym, diet, and do all the good things needed to stave off the worst effects of old age. Alternatively, you could just kick back and go out in a blaze of hedonistic glory!

For the longest time, I didn't have a good answer for this conundrum. Then, stumbling on the emerging research on heroism, I began to see the possibility developing a philosophically robust response to the ever-present spectre of nihilism.

To be crystal clear, I am not a hero. While I certainly aspire to heroism, I regrettably fall short. Basically, I'm doing research to help myself deal with the 'worm at the core'. However, I've decided to publish my research here at heroic aging in the faint hope that others may find something of use.

So, what have I discovered so far?

Well, the good news is that heroism is a broad church; anyone can be a hero!

Man, woman, or other? Who cares!

Religious, agnostic, or atheist? Doesn't matter!

Young or old? Irrelevant!

The only requirements for walking the path of heroism are empathy and a penchant for positive-sum games.

Ultimately, you choose what kind of hero you want to be (or not to be); my job is to provide you with the tools and support to help you on your hero's journey.

Gus, not a hero!
